Two illustration panels with the words, The Incredible Hull, in a comic book style. Each panel shows a blonde woman in various acts. Both panels are mostly pink, green, and blue.
The Prompt
To commemorate the exhibition Bright Fields: The Mastery of Marie Hull at The Mississippi Museum of Art, I created six block illustrations exploring different, unique events in the life of Mississippi artist Marie Hull. The illustrations were used by the Museum in marketing and education materials.
1. Growing up in Jackson with a menagerie of animals in her home as well as early music training
2. Painting in her studio
3. Surviving a tornado as a young girl
4. Traveling across America with her husband during the Depression in a Model T. She sold art along the way to pay for the trip.
5. Traveling through Europe to learn more about art
6. Hull painted and taught all her life, even into old age at a nursing home back in Jackson.
The Design
The idea to title the series “The Incredible Hull” was an attempt to bring Marie out of the history books and show her ongoing adventures. With such an eccentric life, full of adventures, the museum wanted to foreground her story alongside her art.
I selected six moments to explore and developed each illustration in a color palette inspired by Hull’s paintings. Each illustration was hand drawn, then scanned into Adobe Illustrator where I added color and pattern.
