The Prompt
In 2021, Landmark Park in Dothan, AL began the process of redesigning their permanent exhibition space. The space would explore the natural geography of southern Alabama along with local species of plants and animals. A special section displayed the importance of controlled fires in this ecosystem. A live beehive was built into one wall with information about the bee’s importance in maintaining a healthy habitat for all plants.
Two long, horizontal panels from the exhibit. One shows a series of animals organized in an arch based on the food chain. The second panel shows the life stages of a tree with illustrations from left to right.
The Design
The project was led by John Kelton and Phil Ratliff. I worked with their concepts and content to lay out a wealth of information in an engaging and cohesive way. We mimicked the colors and type treatments of the well-known Peterson Field Guides. In multiple instances, I broke apart text-heavy areas in a series of circles or honeycomb shapes to isolate each subject.
Four panel designs from the exhibit showing the different type treatments on display.
Six honeycomb shaped graphics detailing different aspects of a bee’s life.
